Buddy is really smart. He's quite a problem solver. He's figured out he only gets in trouble if someone sees him, so he waits until we aren't looking to get into stuff. If you try to prevent him from doing something, it just slows him down until he figures it out. We put a five-pound weight (the kind you put around your ankles for exercise) on the lid of the kitchen trash can. It took him two days to figure out how much pressure he needed to lift the lid. Now if he were just smart enough to figure out we don't want him in it!

Kallie, on the other hand, isn't smart like that, but she has life experience down pat. If I'm at the kitchen counter chopping food, Kallie watches the floor. Buddy watches me. So when the food hits the ground, Buddy has to look down and look around to find the food. By that time, Kallie's already eaten it because she saw where it landed.

Both dogs will stare at you hoping you share what you are eating. Buddy stands and waits for you say sit. Kallie sits right from the start. She knows that'll get her a treat a whole lot quicker.

Kallie has figured out that when Heath takes the saucepan out of the cabinet, crackers are coming. He only gets it out to heat up chili or soup and always eats crackers with them. So she gets all excited and goes over and sits in front of the pantry waiting for a cracker. Maybe even two! In the meantime, Buddy is wandering around the kitchen in a daze.

Isn't it funny how different they can be? We have one that watches the floor also while the rest of them are watching the cook. Smile

Jean's food routine is different than mine. Beauregard was very 'food aggressive' when he was younger... not so much now... but he still likes to bark and carry on at /breakfast dinnertime. Jean makes him sit in the corner, shut up, and wait until the other three have their bowls before she puts his down. He goes to the corner on his own when I feed them, but knows he can sneak out a bark or two, and also that I put his dish down first. If I try to change the order and make him last, he goes nuts. Rolling Eyes

They also have different ways they sit with us. If I go and sit in Jean's recliner, they sit with me the same way they do when I'm on 'my' loveseat. If Jean is sitting on the loveseat, they want to sit like they do when she's in her chair. Just cracks me up. Razz

Ha! I was going to delete your duplicate post and then remembered I can't do that anymore!

Buddy is smart about all the wrong things. Kallie isn't too bright but she does know the most efficient way to get food. And making the connection between the saucepan and the crackers was genius. She also makes the association with bowls. One night we had the bowls out for dinner, but no crackers because we were having rice. Poor Kallie was so confused we ended up getting the crackers out just so she could have one.

Love it, just like their people smartness takes all different forms!

Reminds me of my gang. (4-when my daughter's dog is included. When we give trachea treats which they are allowed to take to the living room, they know immediately when it's coming. Hubby gets out the cutting board to cut them in half. Piper immediately begins dancing around in circles, barking, jumping, yelping...she is my TRUE trachea addict. Stella and Gracie dance around waiting for the gate to open. George, who has the patience of Jobe, sits very quietly by the gate. They all proceed to the living room, Piper jumps from sofa to sofa, barking, dancing...is absolutely uncontrollable. Stella and Gracie pace back and forth. And always, my little George sits faithfully watching from a distance. He does that because he knows the first one to "settle" gets their treat first. He's ALWAYS first and Piper...well, she's always last. Smile

That is kindof like when it's time to go outside. Armani slowly comes to the door while Tracer barrels right in, pushing Armani over.
Of course I leash up Armani while Trace has to settle down. It's also alpha thing too!

Leigh Ann, that is too funny! Having met Kallie and Buddy, I can just see all that unfolding. I love reading about everyone's dog's funny quirks.

They are all "smart" in different ways, aren't they?

Bandit is absolutely PASSIONATE about hunting moths/butterflies, but he catches far less of them than Lizzie. He dashes SO blindly at the spot he last saw them that he loses them, but Lizzie approaches with the right speed so she can keep an accurate track on the course they take.

Buddy wants to catch a rabbit but his barking scares them off. Not that he could catch one, anyway, but he'd sure like to try.

So funny! We certainly have that here too. If I say "nummies" and they want their food, Bosley knows to just go sit in his crate and wait. The girls get right at my feet instead, and don't get to eat until I tell them to go in their crates.

If we are packing to go somewhere, they know and get very excited. Especially Bosley, who will manage to work his way across the sea of crates in the dog room and sit on top of the first one by the door, as if to say, "you have to take the crate so this way you won't forget me!"

If I come down the stairs in dress clothes and put my dress shoes on for work, they automatically go into their crates. If I bring socks down and put my sweats on, they freak out thinking it is walk time. So funny how they pick up on the smallest things.

Lady loves to chase chipmunks at the cottage, but instead of sitting down by the feeder or the trees, she always goes up onto the high deck and watches. By the time she runs down two flights of stairs they are long gone. Faith has started waiting down below, but I don't think Lady will ever learn!
